Google Launches IMAP Support for Gmail

Monday, October 29th, 2007

Google Inc. has launched a new IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) service for Gmail that will allow users to sync Gmail with their e-mail clients.

“It keeps the same information synced across all devices so that whatever you do in one place shows up everywhere else you might access your e-mail,” said David Murray, associate product manager, in a blog post. “For example, I can read an e-mail in Gmail, then move it to the ‘Starred’ folder on my iPhone, then archive it by moving it to ‘All Mail’ in Thunderbird, then see all of those changes on my BlackBerry or any of [these] devices for that matter.”

The Rewards of Being an Educator

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

Why teach? “I feel like I’m really giving something,” explains elementary school teacher Lori. For Dan Adame, it’s the ‘aha!’ factor: “I could actually see the moment that students understood something which, to me, was like magic.” Fred chose to become a teacher because he “realized that teachers have a greater impact than any other profession in the world.”

The primary reward of being an educator is clear: the pure satisfaction of imparting knowledge. But teachers face challenges as well, both interpersonal and financial. Here’s an overview of what to expect from a career in education: the triumphs and the challenges, the preparation and the road ahead.
Rewards

Meaningful Work. Educators, whether in teaching or administration, are driven by a powerful mission: to provide the best education for their students. In an interview of elementary school teachers, “meaningful work” ranked as the primary draw of a teaching career. Many teachers had left lucrative careers as accountants, lawyers, and engineers, in search of a more personally fulfilling path.

Free software defenders file suit against Monsoon Media over Linux

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

The Software Freedom Law Center said Thursday that it has filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against a consumer electronics company, Monsoon Multimedia, for allegedly violating the license that governs the use of the Linux operating system.

This is the first case filed in the United States against a company for allegedly not complying with the terms of the General Public License (GPL) version 2, according to the SFLC, which provides legal representation for free software projects. The GPL is used by Linux and countless other free and open-source software programs.

The suit was filed on behalf of the creators of BusyBox, a set of Unix utilities used in embedded systems and licensed under the GPL version 2. (Click here to see a PDF of the complaint.)

Under the terms of the GPL version 2, people can use GPL software within their own products. But when they redistribute that software, they must make the source code available.

Linux coders hash out support for new iPods

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

Programmers have bypassed a new difficulty in providing Linux support for the latest-generation iPods.

Already, iPods weren’t simple to use in Linux, because Apple prefers people use iTunes to access the media players and doesn’t supply a Linux version of the software. The newest iPods, though, didn’t work at all, according to the iPod-minus-iTunes blog. The database that the iPod uses to keep track of songs, videos, album art and other data was encrypted in the new models, the programmers said. That means Linux music-management software such as Amarok or Rhythmbox wouldn’t work.

Over the weekend, a number of programmers cracked the code, and technical instructions for using the new iPods are available. The workaround involves many technical steps, though, and many of them must be repeated each time new music is added to the iPod.

Apple has posted a new beta build of its Safari Web browser for Mac OS X and Windows, Safari 3.0.2 beta. It’s available for download now.

Safari 3.0.2 for Mac OS X beta features several changes, including the latest security updates, improved stability, and improved WebKit support for Mail, iChat and Dashboard.

According to a security note offered by Apple, Safari Beta Update 3.0.2 incorporates the same WebCore and WebKit fixes that Apple published separately on Friday as Security Update 2007-006. Other improvements include a fix in both Mac OS X and Windows versions of Safari that corrects access control to window properties to prevent malicious Web sites from cross-site scripting.
